Hoods
What Is a Car Hood?
The car hood plays a big role in several important functional and non-functional features of your vehicle. In terms of aesthetics, it adds to your vehicle’s styling, covering the engine and its components and featuring body lines to enhance the design. It also adds to your vehicle’s aerodynamics, helping reduce wind resistance and maximizing fuel efficiency.
While those non-functional uses are great, a hood’s functional uses are even more essential. Your hood protects the engine and its electronic components, such as the alternator or battery, from rain and other elements. Another functional responsibility of a car hood panel is to absorb the energy from a collision. Like many automotive body panels, automakers design car hoods with engineered weak spots, known as crumple zones, that absorb the impact of the collision and yield to keep the energy from reaching the cabin and potentially injuring the occupants.
If your hood is damaged, it can negatively impact your vehicle’s appearance or even affect its ability to perform its key functional responsibilities. Replacing your hood or its components, such as the hood latch or hood release, can restore its fit, form, and function to the automaker’s specifications.
