A/C and Heater Controls FAQ | AutoNation Parts

What are the symptoms of a bad climate control module?

Common warning signs of a failing HVAC control module include an unresponsive dashboard interface, lights flickering on the control panel, or settings changing on their own. If your system is stuck blowing only hot or cold air, it could be a bad module, or you may need to replace the AC heater blend door actuator to restore correct temperature mixing.

Why does my car heater fan only work on high speed?

If your climate control fan works on high speed but fails on lower settings, the culprit is almost always a failed blower motor resistor. This component regulates electrical resistance to control air speeds; when it fails, it defaults to the highest, unrestricted speed setting. If no air blows at all, you may instead need a replacement blower motor.

Why is my car A/C and heater control knob spinning freely?

A spinning knob usually indicates that the plastic post inside the dial has cracked or sheared off, preventing it from grabbing the control switch post. Replacing the worn-out temperature control knobs is an easy DIY fix. However, if the dial is structurally intact but the system fails to adjust, you likely need a new internal temperature control switch.

Why will my car A/C not switch from defrost to vents?

When air only blows out of the windshield defrost vents despite making changes on your dash console, the issue points to a vacuum leak, a failed vacuum control switch, or a faulty mode door actuator. In vacuum-controlled setups, the defrost vent is the safety default setting when system vacuum pressure drops. Be sure to check your vehicle's A/C hoses and fittings to rule out simple line leaks.

How do I choose the correct A/C and heater control panel?

To prevent electronic compatibility issues, you must match the exact specs of your existing assembly (such as automatic dual-zone climate vs. manual climate controls). We highly recommend using our Search by Vehicle Fitment Tool to locate the exact OEM matches. From there, you can browse compatible A/C & heater controls designed specifically for your vehicle configuration.

Why does my climate control shut off when accelerating?

If your air stops blowing or switches vents under acceleration, you are likely losing engine vacuum. This is usually caused by a bad vacuum check valve or a small leak in the climate control lines. If your compressor is shutting down completely under load, check your A/C compressor & clutch assembly or review the system's electronic pressure sensors.
