Fuel Pumps
How Fuel Pumps Work
Your vehicle's fuel pump is a part of its fuel system, which includes other parts like the filter, injectors, and tank. The pump pulls fuel from your tank and through the lines into the rail. The injectors draw from the rail to spray fuel into the engine cylinders.
Most of these pumps are automatic with assistance from a DC motor. Older pumps were mechanical and needed engine power to work. Most modern vehicles have a new style of fuel pump. Even though pumps are made to last, they can eventually fail. If you have a failing fuel pump, you'll likely experience poor fuel economy, weak engine performance, or your vehicle won't start.
Another sign that your fuel pump is failing is a squealing sound from the engine. The average life of a fuel pump is at least 100,000 miles, so this generally isn't a part you'll need to replace until your vehicle is well up there in mileage.
