What Purpose Do Hub Caps Serve?

Hub caps, sometimes confused with wheel center caps, largely serve aesthetic purposes. Not all vehicles have them, but they usually cover the lug nuts on your wheel. Hub caps aren't crucial, but they do protect certain parts of your wheels, including the lug nuts.

The reason you don't see hub caps much on modern vehicles is that many modern vehicles use aluminum or metal alloy wheels instead of steel. The alloy wheels do a better job of resisting corrosion from salt and other road chemicals. If you have steel wheels, hub caps are necessary to protect the wheels from these things. Your wheels will also look much better with them on. If your car's wheels can be equipped with hub caps, it might even be appealing to change them up now and then to achieve a different look.
