How to Replace Transmission Fluid
Fresh transmission fluid maintains proper shifting and prevents premature wear. At AutoNation, we stock a complete inventory of transmission filters and components to keep your transmission shifting smoothly. Regular fluid changes extend transmission life and improve performance. This maintenance task requires attention to detail and the right tools, but many DIY mechanics can handle it successfully.
Safety Preparations
Park your vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Allow the transmission to cool completely - hot fluid can cause severe burns. Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires. Lift and secure the vehicle with jack stands, never rely on a jack alone. Gather your tools and supplies before starting.
Check Fluid Condition
Before beginning, check your current fluid condition. Clean transmission fluid should be bright red and smell sweet. Dark brown or black fluid with a burnt smell indicates potential transmission problems. If you notice metal particles or grit on the dipstick, your transmission components might need inspection.
Gather Required Materials
You'll need new transmission fluid (check your manual for the correct type and quantity), a new transmission filter and gasket, drain pan, basic hand tools, and rags. Having a transmission pan gasket scraper helps remove old material without damaging sealing surfaces.
Drain the Fluid
Position your drain pan under the transmission. Remove the pan bolts starting from one corner, leaving two opposite corner bolts loose. As you remove the final bolts, the pan will tilt and drain. Be prepared - this can be messy. Some transmissions have a drain plug, making this step cleaner.
Clean and Inspect
Clean the transmission pan thoroughly with solvent and inspect for metal particles or debris. These could indicate internal wear. Check the pan for damage or warping. Clean all gasket surfaces completely - any old material left behind can cause leaks.
Replace Filter and Gasket
Remove the old transmission filter and install the new one. Make sure it's positioned correctly and all O-rings are properly seated. Install the new pan gasket, being careful not to overtighten bolts which can distort the pan. Follow a proper bolt-tightening sequence to prevent leaks.
Add New Fluid
Add the specified amount of new fluid through the dipstick tube or fill hole. Start with less than the total capacity - you can always add more. Start the engine and shift through all gears with the parking brake on. This circulates fluid throughout the transmission.
Check Level and Test
Check the fluid level following your vehicle's specific procedure - some require the engine running and warm, others need it off. Add fluid as needed until the level is correct. Take a short test drive, checking for leaks and proper shifting. Recheck the fluid level after the test drive.
