Engine Bearings
The Importance and Function of Engine Bearings
Engines primarily rely on oil for lubrication, but that’s not the only way they minimize friction and heat. They also employ various engine bearings that reduce resistance while running at thousands of revolutions per minute. When these bearings age or fail, they can lead to catastrophic engine damage.
Most engines have the same types of bearings, starting with the main crankshaft bearings, which sit at the front and rear of the crankshaft inside the engine. Next are the connecting rod bearings, where the connecting rods attach to the crankshaft. The piston head bearings reduce resistance where the pistons connect to the top of the connecting rods. Finally, the camshaft bearings reduce friction from the camshaft spinning inside the engine.
If an engine bearing starts failing, you may hear a faint grinding sound from inside the engine. As the bearing gets worse, the noise will get louder. Eventually, the bearing can fail, leading to excessive friction and damaging internal engine components.
Because engine bearings play such a key role, replacing them the moment they start making noise is important.
